In the last couple of months many people have commented on this subject from Pete Carroll to Barack Obama. The current BCS has proved to a pain in the ass to say the least in determining the champion of college football. This argument comes up every year that the NCAA should implement a playoff system. Right now the NCAA is not even involved in the selection process. A playoff is the best way to go.
The Bowl Championship Series is a joke for deciding the National Championship. The true purpose is too generate money for the various sponsors. The BCS clears over $100 million a year in total revenue. Its quite clear the BCS follows money as ESPN recently outbid Fox Sports to the tune of $125 million per year from Jan. 2011 to Jan. 2014. Fox Sports currently pays 82.5 million a year.
The BCS has been in place since the 1998 season. The BCS picks are a number of polls and computer selection methods. Under the current BCS system, only the top 2 ranked BCS teams will ever have chance of being crowned national champions. On top of that, teams that remain undefeated during the regular season from a weaker conference could be struck from the top 2 for failing to have a tough schedule or because were underestimated in the human opinion polls.
Now I am not saying do away with the BCS. I am saying add a playoff system to it. Say the top 8 teams in a playoff situation. Keep the non BCS bowl games for those teams we still need to make feel good about there program. The top 8 teams at the end of the season, regardless of conference, should enter a playoff format, using the current BCS bowl games as the venue. All BCS/Playoff bowl games would be played at the beginning of January, much like what happens now.
Sooner or later this will have to be put in place. Regardless of academics or deans. This is a national sport that has odds and lines and people make money off of the sport. The pressure will come in time. Thank you for reading and happy holidays.
