Will Michael Vick play this year?

Michael Vick

Michael Vick was released May 20th, 2009 from federal prison in Leavenworth after serving 19 months for financing a dogfighting ring. The main questions have been ‘When will Vick be reinstated?’ and ‘What team will Vick play for?’ We bring our own opinions to the table on this and we would like to hear your opinions as well in our comments section.

We don’t think Michael Vick will be reinstated this year. I doubt Roger Goodell is in much of a hurry to reinstate Vick and deal the media frenzy that will come with it. Michael Vick is a public relations nightmare waiting to happen right now. The NFL and Roger Goodell do not want that kind of negative attention. I seriously do not think Vick has paid his debt to society or to the NFL either. I still see a cocky, overrated, showboat of a QB. No one knows for sure if Vick has changed, and no one is going to trust his word at this point. You have to remember that Vick lied to Arthur Blank (Falcons Owner) and Roger Goodell about being involved with dog fighting. If he is reinstated then when Travis Henry is done serving his time for 11lbs of cocaine he was caught with we can let him back in the league as well right? Arthur Blank was quoted at a NFL owners’ meeting “Its goes beyond, ‘Has he paid his debt to society?’ Because I think that from a legal standpoint and financially and personally he has.” If Blanks says he’s good it must be ok. No matter how you look at, a crime is a crime. I can relate and I can tell you its almost impossible to get a job with a record so why should the NFL be any easier. In a working man’s world Vick would be lucky to do anything better than construction.

If by some chance the NFL does reinstate Vick I don’t see him starting, at least not this year. I doubt there will be a serious bidding war for him either. He has been two years out of the league, might as well be double that when it comes to being on the field. Lets also take into account he still has a contract with the Falcons. The Falcons do not want him but they want to be compensated. I will tell you right now; whatever they ask it will be too much. If Vick does make a return then the most logical place I think would be the Washington Redskins. After failing to trade for Jay Cutler and unable to move up in the draft to secure Sanchez this would be the most logical move. Dan Snyder is not a man who fears taking chances.

What ever does happen, people will be watching with interest. I hope for the sake of the NFL they make the right decision. I believe in 2nd chances as much as the next person but there is also a business aspect to this and sometimes its better just to cut your losses.

Update 1:20pm cst

In a shocking move by the Atlanta Falcons they officially release rights to Vick allowing him to sign with any team he wishes. This could get interesting.
