NCAA Football 10 – Feedback

Updated 9:30 am cst July 16th 2009
This will be a two part article on NCAA Football 10 and our feedback on the game.
I got right into NCAA Football 10 yesterday afternoon like a kid on x-mas. Being from the Atari 2600 age I am always anxious to see what the new year of these football games hold.
The opening for me is the best part, nothing like some highlights to get the blood pumping. I really liked the opening presentation, good job EA. I started with downloading the fixed rosters first. The rosters that came with the game are incomplete. This was pretty basic and took me all of 3 minutes from the time I found the locker to the download and load process.
My next stop was Teambuilder. The code to activate the slots are on the back of the book that comes with the game. After activating the slots I located my team and proceeded to download. After getting my team downloaded I went straight to game. I will now hit on a few things.
Teambuilder
In general I wasn’t sure how well this concept would work but it looks like it turned out pretty good. There are some questions on the graphics on the helmets but I will hit more on that later after I take a few screenshots to confirm. I was impressed overall with this part of the game though and how it turned out.
Weather Channel Live Feed
I am not sure how this works. If it goes off location according to date and time then its not working. The live feed showed 87F and cloudy where I was. Not even close, 103F and sunny is more like it. Worth looking into a little more.
AI
There are times when the AI is brilliant and then there are times I wonder what the hell it was doing. There were times during the game my DL would run right by the QB within inches and not break off to sack. After happening a few times I took control of these players and started pounding the QB. I did notice that awareness for the ball seems to be better. The opposing QB put some air under the ball down the middle of the field about 7 or 8 yards and I was shocked to see my LB get under it and pull off a one hand INT. On the offensive side the WR’s do actually go for the ball and will make some amazing leaps to grab it.
Overall Gameplay
You get three choices before the game of how you want your players to play. Aggressive, Balanced, and Conservative. I went with aggressive and let me tell you it was. I was called for multiple late hits and face masking while on defense. The motion of the players is much more smooth in my opinion. 3rd down is still almost unstoppable if you are playing a top 20 team. Be sure and get rid of the ball quick. My first game was a pick drill on both sides of the ball. In one play my QB was drilled as I released the ball, DE picked off. I was really digging that. Commentary is basically from last year with a few new things added in there. I also noticed while running the ball the RB keeps moving his legs when he is stopped and stood up. I don’t believe this was as apparent in last years version. Stripping the ball was also a big thing for me, I must have stripped the ball 5 times if not more, I really like the players getting two hands on the ball and ripping it out.
Other Small Notes
Whats the point of talking about a squib kick if you don’t have the option to do one. I can drill the ball down the field but they always catch it, or I can nail the piss out of an onsides kick, either way its not a squib.
A friend and I played on the same team in one game. This will take practice. I wasn’t too impressed with this. The 2nd player cannot bring up the play the team is running to check his assignment. This is a big issue for me.
Friday I will hit more on NCAA Football 10 gameplay, Road to Glory, Season Showdown, and more Teambuilder. Until then, peace.
CONT – Part 2
Wont have time to do this tomorrow so I will knock out the rest now.
Seems there is still a roster issue according to other sources. The rosters from the EA lockers are half ass from what some people have said. This has had some negative effect from some players but this will be eventually overcome. I don’t see it as that big of a deal.
Teambuilder is also an issue for some people when searching for there teams. I had no problems with this and played with it last night and still saw no issues.
The Weather Channel Live Feed finally caught up.
Something I did take note on, while flipping through the menus there seems to be a pause, not real long of a pause but long enough that it was noticeable. This may be just on PS3 as I haven’t heard much Xbox360 feedback.
Season Showdown looks like a lot of work was put into it. I have to wonder though if it was a misallocation of resources with the rosters being such a mess. I will touch on this just real quick, if you are up by 28 or more in the 3rd do not pass, its kills your sportsmanship.
The last thing I want to hit on is the paid content. I haven’t said anything on this but I will now and use just one word, RIDICULOUS!
I really like the game. I hear a lot of people complaining which is nothing new. Same shit every year and usually from the same people. Even if the game was perfect these people would still bitch. My main issue was the approach, EA seems more bent on making a buck than they do actually making a solid game. I can deal with small things like rosters, but paying for content? Make a decent patch and fix the issues, I would pay for that in a heartbeat.

MaddenFans.com – NFL Power Rankings – Cont – Part 7

We continue with our NFL Power Rankings today. With only 8 teams left there was a lot of debate in what order to put them in. Feel free to leave comments. Our previous article for the NFL Power Rankings can be found here.
32. Detroit Lions
31. Cleveland Browns
30. Kansas City Chiefs
29. St Louis Rams
28. Oakland Raiders
27. Cincinnati Bengals
26. San Francisco 49ers
25. Denver Broncos
24. Jacksonville Jaguars
23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
22. Seattle Seahawks
21. Washington Redskins
20. Miami Dolphins
19. Buffalo Bills
18. NY Jets
17. Carolina Panthers
16. Minnesota Vikings
15. New Orleans Saints
14. Green Bay Packers
13. Houston Texans
12. Chicago Bears
11. Arizona Cardinals
10. Philadelphia Eagles
9. Atlanta Falcons
8. Dallas Cowboys
Chemistry is a big thing in the NFL. The losses of T.O, Pacman, and Tank Johnson will be good for this team. On paper they are not a better team offensively though unless Romo decides to step up and take the reins. Even though he is not a natural leader he is still one of the better QBs in the league. Wade Philips should take over the defensive play calling again this year with Brian Stewart gone. Dallas also has a triple threat at running back with Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. The Cowboys will also have five new starters, four of them on defense. Chris Canty going to the Giants could be a big loss for this team. One thing is for sure, no playoff win, no more Wade Philips.
7. San Diego Chargers
You have to know the Chargers are getting tired of getting so close to the Super Bowl. This could be the year it works for them. Shawne Merriman will be returning after have a serious knee surgery last year. Philip Rivers continues to prove he is an NFL elite QB. LT will be returning after rushing for a career low 1,110 yards rushing. Norv Turner has done a great job making this team a pass first type offense, but the defense still needs work. The defense seem to have a lot of trouble stopping the pass last year. They weren’t many changes made during the offseason so basically this is the same team just one year older. They need to make this the year because the window of oppurtunity to make a Super Bowl is closing quickly.
6. Tennessee Titans
The Titans are in a position to make another run like last year. I was really pulling for the Titans considering how weak the WR corps were. The Titans went out and fixed that problem during the offseason by picking up Nate Washington from Pittsburgh and drafting Kenny Britt from Rutgers. The Titans also have one of the best running back tandems in the NFL with Chris Johnson and Lendale White. I am skeptical as to whether not losing Albert Haynesworth will effect them. Most teams say they never worried about a DL more than Haynesworth. The thing that impressed me the most last year was the Titan secondary, the concern there though is depth. Michael Griffin will probably be one of the best FS in the league before its all said and done. Look for a strong outing by the Titans again this year.
5. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts have new coach with Jim Caldwell who is unproven at a head coaching position in the NFL. His previous job before coming to the Colts was at Wake Forest where is was 26-63. The big issue for the Colts this season will be getting there running game in check. They addressed that in the draft by picking up Donald Brown in the first round. Addai is going to need the help as his yard per carry average has dropped since he came aboard. Peyton Manning still has many available weapons even with the release of Marvin Harrison. Reggie Wayne and and Anthony Gonzalez will be the new receiving tandem for the Colts. The Colts need to get over the hump and start driving deeper into the playoffs. Time will tell if this can be accomplished.

MaddenFans.com – NFL Power Rankings – Cont – Part 6

We continue with our next 4 teams. I know we are running a little late on this and I apologize. The next four will be out before week’s end as we start wrapping it up. Here is the previous teams we have touched on. Again, this NFL Power rankings, not Madden.
32. Detroit Lions
31. Cleveland Browns
30. Kansas City Chiefs
29. St Louis Rams
28. Oakland Raiders
27. Cincinnati Bengals
26. San Francisco 49ers
25. Denver Broncos
24. Jacksonville Jaguars
23. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
22. Seattle Seahawks
21. Washington Redskins
20. Miami Dolphins
19. Buffalo Bills
18. NY Jets
17. Carolina Panthers
16. Minnesota Vikings
15. New Orleans Saints
14. Green Bay Packers
13. Houston Texans
You can catch our past articles on our previous NFL Power Rankings here.
12. Chicago Bears
The Bears made the biggest move during the NFL offseason by acquiring Jay Cutler from Denver. Cutler could be the answer to all of the QB problems Chicago has had. Cutler won’t put up the numbers he had in Denver because of the weak WR corps. Hester has been made the #1 WR and he is a certifiable deep threat but everyone beyond Hester is unproven. Not to worry to much though when you have last years rookie sensation Matt Forte in the back field. Forte racked up 1,238 yards rushing and led the team with 63 receptions. Most of the defense from there last Super Bowl run in still intact but it seems Urlacher has lost a step and Lance Briggs has taken his place as the Bears best LB. If the WR’s can produce then Chicago could be a serious contender. They need to get hot now before the defense gets any older.
11. Arizona Cardinals
The question on everyone’s mind so far has been ‘Are they a fluke?’ or ‘Are they a one year wonder?’ I can tell you now they are not. This isn’t the same team that put losing seasons up constantly over the last 21 years. On the other hand the last 7 of 8 teams that have made the Super Bowl and lost didn’t make the playoffs the next year. The Cardinals would like to run the ball more but with the likes of Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin they have been airing it out. It was pretty obvious Edgerrin James was on his way out the door and in comes Chris Wells with the Cardinals 1st round draft pick. They are going to have to prove they can run the ball. The defense will also need to step up as they lack an elite pass rusher. The secondary is set with the signing of Bryant McFadden and second year pro Rodgers-Cromartie who has proved he is a shutdown corner. Luckily for Arizona the NFC West may be the worst division in football.
10. Philadelphia Eagles
I know many people will think I am crazy for sticking the Eagles here. I have two major concerns though and will explain why. First Jim Johnson (Defensive Coordinator) could be out the whole season with melanoma (skin cancer), he started battling it last season. This will effect the disguised blitzes and dominating defense the Eagles are so well known for. Secondly, Westbrook has had major ankle surgery and even though the Eagles expect him back by the end of the summer I doubt his production will be anything over last year. McNabb doesn’t have many more years left so he better make the best of it with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. The Eagles had some big losses with Dawkins and Sheppard. Hopefully the Eagles can pick up where they left off and not struggle in the early going.
9. Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan made many fans forget about the Petrino and Vick debacle. Matt Ryan is a cool cat in the huddle and they are building this team around him. The acquisition on Tony Gonzalez was an excellent move considering tight ends only made 19 of the team’s 265 receptions. Michael Turner also made his break onto the scene and proved he could do the job with 376 carries leading the NFL. The Falcons pretty much went defense the whole draft. John Abraham could use some help outside. Atlanta should make another run in the tough NFC South.
