This will be a two part article on NCAA Football 10 and our feedback on the game.
I got right into NCAA Football 10 yesterday afternoon like a kid on x-mas. Being from the Atari 2600 age I am always anxious to see what the new year of these football games hold.
The opening for me is the best part, nothing like some highlights to get the blood pumping. I really liked the opening presentation, good job EA. I started with downloading the fixed rosters first. The rosters that came with the game are incomplete. This was pretty basic and took me all of 3 minutes from the time I found the locker to the download and load process.
My next stop was Teambuilder. The code to activate the slots are on the back of the book that comes with the game. After activating the slots I located my team and proceeded to download. After getting my team downloaded I went straight to game. I will now hit on a few things.
Teambuilder
In general I wasn’t sure how well this concept would work but it looks like it turned out pretty good. There are some questions on the graphics on the helmets but I will hit more on that later after I take a few screenshots to confirm. I was impressed overall with this part of the game though and how it turned out.
Weather Channel Live Feed
I am not sure how this works. If it goes off location according to date and time then its not working. The live feed showed 87F and cloudy where I was. Not even close, 103F and sunny is more like it. Worth looking into a little more.
AI
There are times when the AI is brilliant and then there are times I wonder what the hell it was doing. There were times during the game my DL would run right by the QB within inches and not break off to sack. After happening a few times I took control of these players and started pounding the QB. I did notice that awareness for the ball seems to be better. The opposing QB put some air under the ball down the middle of the field about 7 or 8 yards and I was shocked to see my LB get under it and pull off a one hand INT. On the offensive side the WR’s do actually go for the ball and will make some amazing leaps to grab it.
Overall Gameplay
You get three choices before the game of how you want your players to play. Aggressive, Balanced, and Conservative. I went with aggressive and let me tell you it was. I was called for multiple late hits and face masking while on defense. The motion of the players is much more smooth in my opinion. 3rd down is still almost unstoppable if you are playing a top 20 team. Be sure and get rid of the ball quick. My first game was a pick drill on both sides of the ball. In one play my QB was drilled as I released the ball, DE picked off. I was really digging that. Commentary is basically from last year with a few new things added in there. I also noticed while running the ball the RB keeps moving his legs when he is stopped and stood up. I don’t believe this was as apparent in last years version. Stripping the ball was also a big thing for me, I must have stripped the ball 5 times if not more, I really like the players getting two hands on the ball and ripping it out.
Other Small Notes
Whats the point of talking about a squib kick if you don’t have the option to do one. I can drill the ball down the field but they always catch it, or I can nail the piss out of an onsides kick, either way its not a squib.
A friend and I played on the same team in one game. This will take practice. I wasn’t too impressed with this. The 2nd player cannot bring up the play the team is running to check his assignment. This is a big issue for me.
Friday I will hit more on NCAA Football 10 gameplay, Road to Glory, Season Showdown, and more Teambuilder. Until then, peace.
CONT – Part 2
Wont have time to do this tomorrow so I will knock out the rest now.
Seems there is still a roster issue according to other sources. The rosters from the EA lockers are half ass from what some people have said. This has had some negative effect from some players but this will be eventually overcome. I don’t see it as that big of a deal.
Teambuilder is also an issue for some people when searching for there teams. I had no problems with this and played with it last night and still saw no issues.
The Weather Channel Live Feed finally caught up.
Something I did take note on, while flipping through the menus there seems to be a pause, not real long of a pause but long enough that it was noticeable. This may be just on PS3 as I haven’t heard much Xbox360 feedback.
Season Showdown looks like a lot of work was put into it. I have to wonder though if it was a misallocation of resources with the rosters being such a mess. I will touch on this just real quick, if you are up by 28 or more in the 3rd do not pass, its kills your sportsmanship.
The last thing I want to hit on is the paid content. I haven’t said anything on this but I will now and use just one word, RIDICULOUS!
I really like the game. I hear a lot of people complaining which is nothing new. Same shit every year and usually from the same people. Even if the game was perfect these people would still bitch. My main issue was the approach, EA seems more bent on making a buck than they do actually making a solid game. I can deal with small things like rosters, but paying for content? Make a decent patch and fix the issues, I would pay for that in a heartbeat.
