The Madden Curse in 2010

Madden NFL Football

The end of the regular season in the NFL is coming to close and we look back on the Madden Curse and how its effected previous years and this year. Madden NFL started putting players on the cover in 1999 and since then most of these players have gone down hill once on the cover. We will start from the beginning.

1999 – Garrison Hearst was on select covers of Madden. Hearst rushed for 1,570 yards for the San Francisco 49ers setting a franchise record previously held by Roger Craig. That same year in the divisional playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons, Hearst broke his ankle on the first play from scrimmage. Hearst was told by doctors he may never play football again. Hearst ran into complications following his surgery and missed the next two seasons.

2000 – This was the last year John Madden was ever on the cover of the game. The cover included Barry Sanders in the background. Barry Sanders retired before the season ever started and its cursed the Lions since.

2000 PAL Edition – Dorsey Levens had a great year and is never mentioned in Madden Curce lore.

2001 – Eddie George was on the cover of Madden in 2001. George had rushed for 1,509 yds and 14 TD’s, but a costly fumble in the playoffs in 2000, the year he was on the cover, lost the Titans the game. Eddie George never had a very high yards per carry average in his career. Many people will say his lack of production the next year was attributed to the curse. I would say it was more along his number of carries were almost 100 less than the previous year. This is about the only year I really haven’t seen the ‘Madden Curse’ pop up its head in full force.

RIP Chris Henry

Chris Henry

If most of you haven’t heard, Chris Henry, WR of the Cincinnati Bengals passed yesterday morning. He will be missed by the NFL and fans. We will pass along our condolences to the family. He will be missed by everyone and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Chris Henry was 26 years old and he had 12 catches for 236 yards — his 19.7-yard average per catch leads the team — when he broke his left arm during a victory over the Baltimore Ravens, ending his season.

MaddenFans.com Downtime

MaddenFans.com Server Issue

We seemed to run into little issue with our server yesterday morning about 11am cst that caused MaddenFans.com to be down for almost 24 hours. This was a hardware failure that has been corrected and we should not see any more downtime. We have been with the same host for over 4 years with various websites and I can tell you now this is the first time we have had such an issue. I do apologize to the community.

MaddenFans.com – Madden NFL 10 Top 5 Dominant Teams

Madden NFL 10

Today we are picking what we think will be the top dominant teams within Madden. These are the teams we think will be used the most within the game.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Pittsburgh Steelers

You should find many players using them just for the defense and Troy Polamalu making the cover. Let’s not also forget about James Harrison who was name NFL Defensive MVP of 2008. There defense was superior last year. The offense isn’t all that shabby either with names like Roethlisberger, Parker, Mendenhall, Moore, Holmes, and Ward. Just a KO waiting to happen if used the right way.

Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons

Nothing short of a miracle last year as Matt Ryan established himself as an NFL QB. Michael Turner finally got his chance to start and showed why the Chargers should have kept him and traded LT out. Atlanta should be an offensive nightmare with Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez as well. The defense is also pretty good upfront with John Abraham getting to the QB over 16 times last year. With additions they made during the draft we should see a strong Atlanta team in Madden and used quite a bit more.

Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore is always dominating on the defensive side of the ball and it takes a player who loves to play defense and can cause turn overs. Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed lead this explosive defense. Joe Flacco made a great impression last year and should pick up where he left off with Willis McGahee and Ray Rice in the backfield. They will be popular this year and a force in Madden NFL 10 without a doubt.

New England Patriots
New England Patriots

Players love the Pats for some reason. With Tom Brady coming back this will be hard to pass up. Randy Moss can still out run most defenders and go up for the ball. Let’s not forget Wes Welker either. Maroney and Fred Taylor are lining up in the backfield. Don’t let the fact they didn’t make the playoffs last year fool you. This team will still be a force to play with and we will see people using them. This is a sound team on the defensive side of the ball especially at LB. With additions of Shawn Springs at CB I don’t expect to see a drop in the number of people who play with New England.

Arizona Cardinals
Arizona Cardinals

I questioned if I would put them on here, but just the fact Fitzgerald is on the team everyone should be flocking to them. It’s a dangerous combination of Boldin and Fitzgerald and will be hard to stop. The running game is still questionable because we don’t know what Chris Wells can do. The defensive side is solid enough and should only get better with names like Rodgers-Cromartie and Antrel Rolle. The main reason to take this team will be the passing. If Boldin is not traded expect to see an influx of Cardinal players and some dominating performances.

Other teams to consider: San Diego, Chicago, and Dallas.
